In 2018 I started making visits to East Learning Center to talk to Emily Rodgers art class about photography and document the students and staff. East Learning Center is an alternative middle and high school in Binghamton, NY. The students come from public schools all over Broome County. During my first visit I noticed an obvious lack of educational resources available to the students, so I kept making returns to share my experiences and give them an opportunity to be in front of or behind the camera. I was struck by the kids charisma, passion, and creativity. Most of them directed their own photographs.
My hope for this project is to shed light on this community of caring educators and students, and to show that our youth are the future and they deserve more attention and funding.
